The Energy Balance in Nutrition

The Energy Balance in Nutrition

A good diet should provide just about the amount of energy we need to spend. But what if we eat more? And what if we eat less? [Nutrition Steps 3.1]

Presented by Carmina Cuilty-McGee, MS, RDN, LE

Nutrition and lifestyle practices (physical activity, sleep, self-care and stress response) are often overlooked in patients struggling with neuroendocrine disorders. Patients will often be given simplistic directives such as “just lose weight” or “you need to eat healthier”, without the specifics on how to accomplish it. The connection between neuroendocrine disorders and nutrition is often not considered by other healthcare specialists treating neuroendocrine disorders. Working with a skilled Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) should be a part of the assessment and treatment process and can contribute greatly to improving the patient\’s health. The RDN provides unique knowledge and skills that can integrate with other health practitioners treating patients with neuroendocrine imbalances. In this webinar we will explore the intersection of nutrition and lifestyle factors in terms of how they can improve and impact neuroendocrine balance.

Principles of a Healthy Diet

Do you want to know about the Principles of a Healthy Diet? Explore accredited online Diet and Nutrition at Brentwood Open Learning College: http://www.bolc.co.uk

The key to a healthy balanced diet is not to ban or omit any foods or food groups but to balance what we eat by consuming a variety of foods from each food group in the right proportions for good health.

The five food groups of healthy food are:
• Fruit and vegetables;
• Bread and cereals;
• Milk and dairy products;
• Meats/alternatives; and
• Drinks

One should eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day.
One serving of dairy equals:

• 1 glass of milk (250ml) or calcium fortified soy milk;
• 40g cheese; and
• 200g carton of low fat yoghurt or 1 cup of custard

Dietary fibre is found in plant foods (fruit, vegetables and whole grains) and is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system.
The body gets its fluid from three sources:

• Drinks, either plain water or as part of other beverages including tea, coffee, and/or squash;
• Solid foods, especially fruits and vegetables (even foods such as bread and cheese provide small amounts of fluid);
• As a by-product of chemical reactions within the body

Food Pyramid for Kids: Nutrition 101

You may know your child eats relatively well, but is she getting enough fruits? Should you be offering more vegetables? We parents fuss a lot over what we’re feeding our kids. But did you know they have an internal barometer of sorts? Kids do a pretty decent job of getting the calories and nutrients they need. Here’s how you help them along.

Added sugars are the syrups and sugars added during the processing of foods and drinks. And according to the FDA, Americans are consuming added sugars in amounts that exceed recommended limits.

On the old labels, added sugars and natural sugars were lumped into “total sugars.” However, now manufactures are required to distinguish the amount of and percent daily value for added sugars. So what should we be looking for?

The American Heart Association has recommended limits for daily added sugar intake.
